Insurance or Private Pay?
Using Insurance
Insurance can make therapy more affordable, but most plans require a qualifying diagnosis and documentation of medical necessity. Certain treatment information may be shared with your insurer for billing and coverage purposes.
Choosing Private Pay
Private pay offers greater flexibility regarding treatment goals, frequency, and privacy because information generally does not need to be submitted to an insurance company.
A diagnosis is not automatically required for private-pay therapy, although diagnostic assessment and documentation remain part of responsible clinical practice when appropriate.
Regardless of how you pay, your care remains collaborative, confidential within applicable legal limits, and grounded in your individual needs.
Getting Started
Before your first appointment, you will receive secure electronic intake forms through TherapyNotes.
We are happy to answer questions about fees, insurance, and payment options so you can make an informed decision about your care.

Diagnosing
Your Care, Your Choice: Diagnosis and Treatment
At FourRivers, we recognize that healing is deeply personal. Your experiences, relationships, identities, and life circumstances cannot always be understood through a diagnostic label. We believe you deserve to have a meaningful voice in your treatment, including how your concerns are understood and how your goals are established.
We also recognize that the medical model of mental healthcare, while valuable and necessary in many circumstances, has sometimes contributed to stigma, marginalization, and trauma. For individuals whose identities, relationships, or lived experiences have historically been pathologized, the requirement to receive a mental health diagnosis can create additional barriers to seeking care.
We believe that not every struggle is a disorder, not every life transition is an illness, and not every person seeking therapy needs a diagnosis.
When You Choose to Use Insurance
Most insurance plans require a qualifying diagnosis and documentation of medical necessity before psychotherapy services can be reimbursed.
When using insurance, we will discuss any applicable diagnostic requirements with you and work collaboratively to ensure that your treatment remains grounded in your actual experiences, concerns, and goals.
A diagnosis, when appropriate, is one way of communicating clinical information. It does not define who you are, diminish your experiences, or determine your worth.
When You Choose Private Pay
Choosing to pay directly for your mental healthcare allows greater flexibility in how we approach your treatment.
Without insurance reimbursement requirements, we can work together to develop a personalized treatment plan based on what matters most to you, without automatically framing your concerns as symptoms of a mental illness.
For private-pay clients, a formal psychiatric diagnosis is not required simply to justify insurance coverage. Diagnostic assessment remains part of responsible clinical practice, and diagnoses may be established or documented when clinically indicated.
There are circumstances in which a diagnosis may be clinically useful or necessary, such as coordinating care with other healthcare professionals or helping someone navigate aspects of the healthcare system, including access to gender-affirming care.
When these situations arise, we approach diagnostic decisions with transparency, cultural humility, and respect for your autonomy.
At FourRivers, the purpose of therapy is not to fit you into a diagnosis. It is to understand you as a whole person and collaboratively create a path toward healing.
Therapy Without Judgment
FourRivers offers a welcoming, affirming, and nonjudgmental therapeutic environment for individuals, couples, and families seeking mental and emotional healing, support, and personal growth.
You do not need to be in crisis, have a mental health diagnosis, or know exactly what you want to change before reaching out.
Whether you are navigating relationships, identity, grief, trauma, life transitions, emotional distress, or simply seeking a deeper understanding of yourself, your reasons for seeking therapy are valid.
We meet you where you are, with curiosity, compassion, and respect for the experiences that have shaped your life.

Our goal is to make beginning therapy as straightforward, welcoming, and collaborative as possible.
